THE SOCIAL NETWORK

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (Grade: A)

Last night, I found myself staring a hole through the wall of my apartment....once that lost it's lust, I moved on to more entertaining things, such as straightening all my wrinkled dollar bills and reading the labels on all my canned goods.....who knew that green beans were only 40 calories per serving? As fun as those activities were, I still couldn't shake my urge to get out of the house, so I decided that I'd go see a movie...."The Social Network".

A movie about Facebook....there were just soooo many ways that this premise could find it's way on my shit list. Surprisingly tho, not only did this movie not suck, I found it to be one of the most entertaining films I've seen this year. From the opening scene, which begins with the main character Mark Zuckerberg showing off his distinct ability to be a douche, to the ending credits, this film keeps you thoroughly engaged. It made you feel like a fly on the wall of a Harvard Dorm Room during the creation of one of this generation most important pop culture phenomenons. There was lingo about algaehythms and coding that I'll never in my measly ass life be able to comprehend, but not once did I find myself lost....I actually found myself in aw at what seemed to be brilliance. To add to my admiration for this film was their choice of Justin Timberlake to play the charismatic, meandering, Napster creator Sean Parker. From the first time we see Parker hit the screen, we get an uneasy feeling about his character but we revel in his charm and good taste, much like the people on screen. Timberlake puts on another stellar performance (Alpha Dog) and leaves you literally wishing you could have known this guy in real life....maybe then, my Friday would've been a bit different.

The interesting part about this film is that I actually disliked the main character, Mark, but still found myself rooting for him. He talked at a hundred mph, wore flip flops everywhere, spoke down to people, and still we rooted for him. It's this type of emotional paradox that only a great film can give you.

The director of Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons, Seven, And Panic Room did this film as well. His name is David Fincher and he has a knack for capturing everything through a dark and stylish eye and this film does not disappoint...Harvard has never looked more gorgeous than in some of the scenes Mr.Fincher captured here.

This film basically boils down to a group of friends stumbling upon gold in the form of a social network and how that success puts them on an accelerated path to greatness....and also risks derailing their futures entirely. All in all, this film was everything that I wanted and then some.....gorgeous cinematography, beautiful women, engaging characters, great music, an engaging plot, and a shit load of wit....so it receives a whoppoing A grade!!!

REASONS TO GO SEE:

-Some of the most beautiful directing this side of the Himalayas

-Justin Timberlake proving that acting may not just be a side hobby, but his next lucrative venture

-Perfect pacing....the film never gets dull or slow

-Never has a party scene looked so fucking good
